Moving With Pets in Fresno
Your pets don’t know why the furniture is disappearing, but they notice. A little planning keeps them safe, calm and accounted for from the first box to the first night in the new home.

Before moving day
- Get copies of vet records and make sure prescriptions are filled.
- Update ID tags and microchip info with your new address and phone number.
- Bring out carriers and crates early so pets get used to them.
- Keep routines as normal as you can: same feeding and walk times.
- Moving far? Look for a new vet before you need one.
On moving day
Open doors, strangers and big objects moving around are how pets slip out. Pick one plan:
- A quiet room with the door closed and a “Pets inside: keep closed” sign, with water, a bed and a favorite toy, or
- A day with a friend, a sitter or a boarding facility.
Let the crew lead know you have pets so everyone keeps doors closed. Pets travel with you, never in the moving truck.
On the road
- Cats and small animals ride in secured carriers. Dogs ride in a crate or harnessed.
- Never leave a pet in a parked car. In Valley summers it becomes dangerous in minutes.
- Pack a pet bag: food, water, bowls, leash, litter, medications, waste bags and a familiar blanket.
Settling in
Set up one quiet room first, with food, water, bed and litter, before letting pets explore. Walk the yard for gaps in fences and gates. Cats often do best kept inside for a few weeks while they learn their new home. Expect a few off days. Familiar smells and routines help.
Large pets and special cases
Aquariums, birds, reptiles and large animals each need their own plan. Ask your vet or a specialist about safe transport, and set up habitats in the new home before the animals arrive.
